I have a slight obsession with peanut butter. Okay, maybe a BIG obsession with peanut butter. From my pen name (peanutbutterrunner) to the pantry filled with peanut butter goods, this staple occupies my life. Which is odd because I am allergic to every other nut (but more on that later).
When I was younger, my dad and I had a soccer game ritual where I ate a spoonful of peanut butter before every game. It was for good luck but also for the protein. Now that I am older and more conscious about what I eat, peanut butter continues to be an essential part of my diet.
I eat it for the healthy fats and the protein that it provides. It is easy to add to any snack or breakfast for a protein punch. From apples and PB to Kale smoothies, peanut butter instantly boosts the amount of time that my energy will sustain as I go through my daily life.
Everything in moderation is also an underlying message as I preach peanut butter. Although it has a ton of protein and other nutritional benefits, it also is filled with alot of fat. Lots of healthy fat, but still fat. It is important to not eat too much, especially before running because it causes GI distress as your body breaks it down.
I eat my peanut butter in the morning with cereal, overnight oats, chia pudding, or toast. It ensures that my breakfast will last me a while and prevent me from getting hungry. Read below to look at some of the ways I get my peanut butter fix and my favorite peanut butter brands:
Top Peanut Butter: Okay I know that there can only be one, but it is a tie between MaraNatha peanut butter and Trader Joes organic peanut butter. What I like about both is that their ingredients are organic and they are not filled with added sugar and sodium.
If I were to pick, Trader Joes peanut butter would probably be my favorite just because it only has one ingredient: Peanuts. Which I think is the only ingredient that peanut butter should contain (no hydrogenated oils and that horror).
Top Peanut Butter snack: Justin’s peanut butter and banana chips packages are my favorite. They have just the right amount of peanut butter to banana chips ratio and very cute packaging. Justin’s has been voted a favorite nut butter among runners and has a reputation for its minimal ingredients. If you want to create your own copycat, buy banana chips in bulk and pair with Jiff Naturals Grab-and-go packs.
Top Peanut Butter Packet: Wild Friends for sure wins this category. First of all, they have so many delicious flavors to choose from. Second, they also have sunflower butter alternatives and protein flavors that contain protein powder for an added boost. Plus, look at that cute little squirrel in their logo!
Top Peanut Butter Protein Bar: Everyone has their opinion but I personally like Clif Bar’s Peanut Toffee Buzz, because it isn’t too heavy before a run and contains green tea extract for a caffeine bonus.
Misc: I stumbled across these at whole foods and was very curious to try them. Puffworks Original Peanut Butter Puffs are made with peanuts, corn, and salt. That’s it. Their texture is similar to a cheese puff but healthier and with a peanut butter taste. I know its odd, but try them for yourself and tell us what you think. Also they are made by hand which is simply amazing.
